"As well they should be. Their kid shot at a police officer." She let out a sigh ripe with impatience. "I had no choice but to shoothe was going to blow my head off. Would you have preferred a dead cop on the morning news?"
The captain rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Not now, Halloran. Let's just get this over with, and then you can give me attitude all you want."
She didn't answer, just continued to stare at Miller with an unreadable gaze.
Captain Miller turned to the suits. "I'll handle this from here."
One of the men stepped forward. "She's on suspension until the investigation of the shooting is complete. Rules are rules." The rest of the suits nodded in agreement before moving toward the door.
Officer Halloran straightened and opened the door for them. Each one gave her a frown of reproof as they left the room. When they were all in the hallway she slammed the door behind them.
"'Rules are rules,'" she mimicked at their retreating backs. Turning, she stalked forward, placing her palms on the desk and leaning toward Miller. "What's going on here, Captain?" She jerked her head in Chris's direction. ''Who's the stiff?"
Chris raised his eyebrows. He didn't much like her description. Despite a height that easily could be used to intimidate, he was a gentle, soft-spoken man. People liked him. Kids and dogs trusted him. What was the matter with her?
The captain ignored the officer's question, addressing his next words to Chris. Chris jerked his
